About Theatre Bug Mackay

Theatre Bug Mackay started in 2024 as an after school Drama and Music Theatre program for children enrolled at St Francis Xavier Catholic Primary School. (SFX). Classes are taught by Leisa Persson, the SFX Performing Arts Teacher. â€‹â€‹

In 2024, the students performed in a Dramatic Excerpt and Musical Theatre Group at the Mackay Eisteddfod and had much success.

Private tuition for drama and singing is also offer so students can work towards solos and duologues for the Mackay Eisteddfod.

Even though these classes are taught at St Francis school, it is a separate business owned by Leisa Persson and students will need to be enrolled in Theatre Bug. Parents will need to book and pay for each term your child is enrolled in the Theatre Bug Program.

What will the Theatre Bugs learn?

Classes are a mix of drama, musical theatre and basic choreography.

The drama element will focus on speech, vocal and facial expression, characterisation, telling a story, improvisation, team building and script work.

The musical theatre element will focus on a vocal singing warm up and singing songs from musicals as well as other genres, depending on the show the students are working on.

The choreography element will be basic movement to enhance the musical theatre performance the students are developing.

Each class will work towards two acts to perform in the Mackay Eisteddfod.

Junior Theatre Bugs will perform in the 'Grade 3 and Under Dramatic Excerpt Group' and the 'Primary School Music Theatre Group'.

Intermediate Theatre Bugs will perform in the 'Grade 6 and Under Dramatic Excerpt Group' and the 'Primary School Music Theatre Group'.

In 2025, some students may be asked to be involved in some community performances. These extra performances will be invitation only and there will be extra rehearsals in the lead up. Students that are focused and hard working will be invited into such community  performances. Rehearsals will not be charged for these extra performances, however you may need to provide a costume.
